Cyborg chat...
gotcha
10: 25 AM andrewgarcia86
ill find you the link again
10: 25 AM
hey can i ask you a question
10: 25 AM
when you think of cyborgs what comes to mind
10: 25 AM davidmbeiler
assimilate
10: 25 AMresistance is futile
10: 25 AM andrewgarcia86
haha the borg
10: 25 AM davidmbeiler
yeah
10: 25 AM andrewgarcia86
but honestly...do you have a negative perception of them would you say?
10: 25 AM
not the borg...i mean the concept of cyborgs in general
10: 26 AM davidmbeiler
I know the transhuman singularity is coming, but I'm terrified about it
10: 26 AMnegative? not really
10: 26 AMcautious and reserved?
10: 26 AMcertainly.
10: 27 AM andrewgarcia86
cool
10: 27 AM
would you say human-machine interfacing is inevitable?
10: 27 AM davidmbeiler
yes
10: 27 AM andrewgarcia86
and where do you draw the line at...what makes a cyborg? am i cyborg because im basically plugged into my ipod touch?
10: 27 AM davidmbeiler
I think we've already crossed the rubicon on that one
10: 27 AM andrewgarcia86
agreed
10: 28 AM davidmbeiler
I think I'll draw the line when touch is no longer necessary to control electronics
10: 28 AMso those paraplegics who control mice with their brain? ASSIMILATE
10: 28 AM andrewgarcia86
when touch is no longer necessary? why? i mean what about voice activated car features?
10: 29 AM davidmbeiler
I have an answer to that, and a good one, but I need to think about how to phrase it
10: 29 AM andrewgarcia86
take your time im just getting information
10: 29 AM
im going to start a blog on cyborgs soon
10: 29 AM davidmbeiler
neat
10: 30 AMI'll be the dick who FIRST POSTs and questions your logic
10: 30 AMevery blog needs one
10: 30 AM andrewgarcia86
hey dude thats awesome go for it
10: 30 AM davidmbeiler
10: 30 AM andrewgarcia86
here it is: http://youtube.com/results?search_query=grammar+is+is&search_type=&aq=f
10: 31 AM
oops i meant this one : http://youtube.com/watch?v=JHp0LxJixvw
10: 32 AM davidmbeiler
so I don't think that voice activation counts because, arguably, its along the same lines of human input as a computer mouse. The computer can't collect any background information, can't intuit much of anything. When I think cyborg, I think machine-brain interface, without the nuisance of a middleman (in this case, the body)
10: 33 AMwhen you can drive your car while laying in bed, motionless
10: 33 AMthat will be cyborgasmic.
10: 33 AMp.s. please call your blog that.
10: 34 AM andrewgarcia86
haha no way.
10: 35 AM davidmbeiler
heh
10: 35 AM andrewgarcia86
but in any case so your saying a neural interface is necessary to be a cyborg
10: 35 AM
what about people using HUDs and various other ways to augment their reality
10: 35 AM
are they not interfacing directly with machines in a synergistic way?
10: 36 AM davidmbeiler
I think otherwise its just evolution of the regular UIs we have now
10: 36 AM andrewgarcia86
but then couldn't you also consider a neural interface to be regular evolution of our UI's?
10: 36 AM
i mean its merely technology pushed to the next step...like everything else
10: 36 AM davidmbeiler
the difference is the encephalitic barrier
10: 36 AMwhen we see huds because our brain projects an image onto our eyes
10: 36 AM andrewgarcia86
nope
10: 37 AM davidmbeiler
I'll consider that cyborg
10: 37 AMbut when we wear glasses that have a hud
10: 37 AMnot at all
10: 37 AM andrewgarcia86
the difference is exogeny rather than endogeny bro
10: 37 AM
its all brains no matter what the interface is
10: 38 AM davidmbeiler
hm
10: 38 AMI don't think wearing a machine suit would make you a cyborg
10: 38 AMI think it would be using the machine for your needs
10: 39 AM andrewgarcia86
is a "god cap" not the same idea though? simply using a machine or technology to your needs? the only difference is that rather than being outside your body it's inside
10: 39 AM
what makes one more cyborg than the other
10: 39 AM davidmbeiler
I'm unfamiliar with the god cap notion
10: 39 AM andrewgarcia86
implanted electrodes are an example that comes to mind
10: 39 AM davidmbeiler
gotcha
10: 39 AM andrewgarcia86
any direct brain physical implant
10: 41 AM davidmbeiler
I think that if you're unwilling to make the distinction between use of machines and augmentation of self, we're already all cyborgs
10: 41 AM andrewgarcia86
unable or unwilling?
10: 41 AM
i agree with unable
10: 41 AM
but i dont follow if its unwilling
10: 41 AM davidmbeiler
hm
10: 42 AMI meant the literal you
10: 42 AMso are we already all cyborgs, then?
10: 42 AMI'm interface with my keyboard to communicate with you
10: 42 AM andrewgarcia86
i myself am in the process of figuring out exactly what being a cyborg is to me. so i'm open
10: 42 AM davidmbeiler
resistance is futile?
10: 42 AM andrewgarcia86
hahaha
10: 43 AM davidmbeiler
it's a sticky thing to define, I guess
10: 43 AM andrewgarcia86
idk i mean some will say yes. because we are outsourcing our neural capacities to our machines. ipod touch, pda's cell phones, online social media, etc. but if you extend that definition too far then its like saying are we cyborgs because we ride bikes? thats a machine that augments my physical capacities
10: 44 AM
and yes i agree its a sticky thing to define
10: 44 AM davidmbeiler
hm
10: 44 AM andrewgarcia86
which is why im making a blog because there's so much info out there and various technoprogressives and transhumanist communities have much to say but nothing central on the topic
10: 44 AM davidmbeiler
so output is getting easier
10: 44 AMbut input hasn't changed much
10: 44 AM andrewgarcia86
nonsense. you can augment your input using chemicals
10: 44 AM
nootropics, psychedelics
10: 45 AM
unless you don't consider chemical augmentation, technology
10: 45 AM davidmbeiler
hmmmmmm, the biological angle is really interesting
10: 45 AMI didn't even consider that
10: 45 AMso what's to say that if we perfect genetic technology and can regrow arms we're not cyborgs?
10: 45 AM andrewgarcia86
exactly
10: 46 AM
who knows. i mean then what is a cyborg? (im still asking, we havent reached any solid conclusion either of us)
10: 46 AM
you see because the genetic angle is valid as well
10: 46 AM
but there are other perspectives..many other technologies to augment our reality and interfaces with it
10: 46 AM davidmbeiler
yeah
10: 46 AM andrewgarcia86
so could it be that a cyborg is merely a human using any and all capacities available to him to mediate reality?
10: 47 AM
does that just mean that a cyborg is a human looking to self improve or self design?
10: 47 AM davidmbeiler
hm
10: 47 AMI need to consider this
10: 47 AMyou've got me really interested now
10: 48 AM andrewgarcia86
cool man im glad. me and weber were talking about this for a while the other day
